SICM Talk Show/Webinar Episode 1: Managing BSI in Critical Care in the Post-COVID-19 Era

29 July 2023 (Saturday), 2.30 pm (SGT/UTC +8)

Synopsis: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a serious health concern in intensive care units, affecting millions of patients worldwide. BSIs are challenging to diagnose and treat, often resulting in prolonged hospitalisation, multi-organ failures, increased healthcare costs, and high mortality rates. In the post-COVID-19 era, managing BSIs has become even more complex due to several factors, including the continuous increase of antimicrobial resistance. Though the COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant damage to antimicrobial stewardship efforts, it also provided opportunities to try new approaches to managing critical infections, such as BSI, in the post-COVID-19 era. Strategic use of new rapid diagnostic tools to identify critical organisms and their antimicrobial resistance markers, combined with choosing the right antimicrobial treatment, will be explored by the experts during this talk show.

SICM Talk Show/Webinar Episode 2: Managing Pneumonia in Critical Care in the Post-COVID-19 Era

5 August 2023 (Saturday), 2.30 pm (SGT/UTC +8)

Synopsis: Pneumonia is one of the most common infections globally and is associated with high mortality and healthcare expenditure, especially in the elderly, immunocompromised, and critically ill patients. The complexity of managing pneumonia in the post-COVID-19 era has also increased due to changes in etiology and the continually increasing antimicrobial resistance. COVID-19 has also highlighted the importance of timely and accurate diagnosis of pneumonia, particularly for the correct identification of etiological agents in order to choose appropriate treatment. Newer tools such as rapid molecular diagnostic tests promise to offer advantages such as direct detection of the most common pathogens along with selected resistance markers of bacterial pathogens from lower respiratory samples. The risk of MDRO infection in high-risk patients always poses a challenge to clinicians in choosing the best antimicrobials. In this episode, the experts will review the challenges of managing pneumonia in critical care in the post-COVID-19 era by utilising newer diagnostic tools in choosing the most appropriate antimicrobials.
