INFORMATION FOR JUNIOR PHYSICIANS – BECOMING AN ICU PROFESSIONAL IN SINGAPORE
Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) is a sub-specialty that has gain recognition & prominence in the local healthcare scene in the recent decade. Since achieving official sub-specialty status in the Ministry of Health’s Specialist Accreditation Board (SAB), ICM has gone from strength to strength in terms of patient care, research and training of future intensivists.
Important ingredients that ICM trainees should possess include passion and perseverance, for without passion there will be no perseverance. Doctors who wish to embark on ICM training must first be accepted into a parent specialty training program, which include but are not limited to Anaesthesia, Respiratory Medicine (or Pulmonology) and Internal Medicine. The trainees are expected to fulfill the training requirements of their parent training programs and become a SAB-accredited specialist prior to commencing ICM training.
The ICM training regulations may allow trainees to fulfill part of their ICM training requirements within the framework of the parent specialty’s training, thus allowing a shorter duration of training. During ICM training, trainees will be allowed to rotate to the different ICUs. This broad exposure aims to provide adequate grounding in the wide-ranging situations that a intensivist may face during his/her practice. At the end of the ICM training, trainees are required to pass a qualifying examination.
